Dr. Parsa Ravanfar MD, PhD

Psychiatrist & Psychotherapist · Brookline, MA

Integrated medication management and psychodynamic psychotherapy for adults seeking thoughtful, research-informed mental health care.

Who I Work With

I work with adults who are looking for more than a brief medication check. My patients often include:

  • Young adults and professionals navigating anxiety, depression, ADHD, identity exploration, relationship challenges, or career transitions

  • High-functioning adults who seek depth-oriented care that takes their inner life seriously

  • Patients with ADHD seeking careful, non-rushed evaluation and treatment that goes beyond a stimulant prescription

  • People in transition — graduate students, early-career professionals, people moving through major life changes

  • Patients dissatisfied with prior psychiatric care who want a more integrated, less fragmented approach

I bring training in both psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychopharmacology, which means we can work on both the biological and psychological dimensions of what you are experiencing — within the same therapeutic relationship, rather than splitting your care across multiple providers.

My Approach

Most psychiatry today is structured around 15-minute medication visits. I practice differently.

Longer sessions. Initial consultations are 90 minutes, often spread across one to three visits to allow for thorough evaluation. Follow-up sessions are typically 45–60 minutes, long enough for both medication management and meaningful therapeutic work.

Integrated care. I provide psychotherapy and medication management within one therapeutic relationship. Psychotherapy offers space for self-understanding and working through enduring patterns. Pharmacotherapy, when indicated, reduces symptom burden and supports the stability needed for deeper work. Combined, the two approaches inform one another, and the treatment relationship itself becomes a foundation for sustained clinical insight.

Research-informed. My PhD in biological psychiatry from the University of Melbourne and clinical training at Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School inform how I think about phenomenology, diagnosis, treatment, and the limits of what current evidence can tell us. I bring scientific rigor to clinical decisions.

Psychodynamically grounded. I draw on psychodynamic psychotherapy traditions, which means we do not only track symptoms — we try to understand what goes underneath them, how patterns have developed, and what they mean in the context of your life.

Culturally informed. I work to understand each patient's cultural context, family background, and life history as essential to good care.

Background

I am a psychiatrist with subspecialty training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry from Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School. I completed psychiatry residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and earned a PhD in biological psychiatry from the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Although my fellowship training is in child and adolescent psychiatry, my private practice currently focuses on adults — particularly young adults and professionals navigating the kinds of challenges that often emerge between late adolescence and mid-adulthood.

Fees and Insurance

My practice operates on a fee-for-service basis, which allows me to dedicate the time each patient needs for thoughtful, individualized care.

Fees:

Initial consultation (90 minutes): $450

Follow-up sessions (45–60 minutes): $250

Weekly psychotherapy sessions (50 minutes): $150-200

A limited number of reduced-fee slots are available based on financial need. Please feel welcome to ask.

Out-of-network reimbursement. While I do not contract directly with insurance plans, many patients are able to receive partial reimbursement through their out-of-network mental health benefits. I provide detailed receipts (superbills) that you can submit to your insurer. The reimbursement amount varies based on your specific plan, deductible, and your insurer's allowed amount for psychiatric services.

To understand what your plan offers, I encourage you to call the member services number on your insurance card to ask:

  • Do I have out-of-network behavioral health benefits?

  • What is my out-of-network deductible, and how much of it have I met?

  • What is the allowed amount for CPT code 90792 (initial psychiatric evaluation) and for 99214 with the 90836 add-on (follow-up with psychotherapy)?

  • What percentage of the allowed amount will be reimbursed?
